The Clock Tower of the Main Building. Designed by E T Blacket, the Main Building was formally opened in 1859, the top of the Tower was not completed until 1862.
The Mace was acquired in the name and on behalf of Queen Victoria through the Governor of NSW, Sir Charles Fitzroy, in 1854. It was made by Brush and McDonnell, silversmiths of George Street, Sydney.

Detail of the University's mace. As the mace predates the University's grant of arms this rendering of the arms must be a later addition. The mace has the University's original motto "Doctrina paret virtutem" (let teaching promote excellence) engraved below the crown.
