Internet proxy settings
If you are trying to connect to the internet via the University's wireless network, from a computer on campus, or from any of the University Colleges (eg. Sydney Univeristy Village, St Johns), you will need to change your browser configuration to use the University's proxy settings.
Instructions for changing your proxy settings are outlined below.
Windows
- Click on the Start Button > Control Panel > Internet Options
- Click the Connections tab
- Select LAN settings - This displays the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog
- Check only the second box - Use automatic configuration script
- Type http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac in the Address field
- Uncheck all other boxes.
- Click OK. Then click OK again.
Note: if you are using Firefox please follow the steps below, after you have completed the steps above.
Firefox settings for Windows
Note: this setting requires Mozilla Firefox version 3.5.3 or newer. If you do not have version 3.5.3 or newer please update to the latest version of Firefox first.
- Click Tools > Options
- Click the Advanced Button at the top of the window then choose the Network tab
- Click the Settings button in the Connections field.
- Click the third option Use System Proxy Settings
- Then click OK.
Macintosh OSX
Create a new connection location
- From the Apple menu, select System Preferences
- Select Network
- Click on the drop down box at the top of the window, next to the word Location:
- Select Edit Locations . The Locations dialog is shown below.
- Click the + button
- Type University of Sydney Internet
- Click Done

Enter the University proxy settings
- Click System Preferences > Network
- On the left, click the AirPort icon for a wireless connection and Ethernet icon for a LAN connection in colleges
- Select University of Sydney Internet in the Locations field
- Click on Advanced
- Select Proxies
- Check Automatic Proxy Configuration
- Type http://www.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac in the Proxy Configuration File URL field
- Click OK. This brings you back to the main Network window
- Click Apply.

Note: on OSX Leopard you will need to scroll down to be able to see Automatic Proxy Configuration
Firefox settings for Macintosh OSX
Note this setting requires Mozilla Firefox version 3.5.3 or newer. If you do not have version 3.5.3 or newer please update to the latest version of Firefox first.
- Click Firefox > Preferences
- Under the Advanced tab, choose the Network tab
- Select Settings under Connection
- Click Use System Proxy Settings
- Click OK.
