About my UniKey

What is a UniKey and what is it used for?

A UniKey account is a login name and password that grants you access to online services and e-facilities such as email and internet access. It is provided to all staff and students of the University of Sydney.

Your UniKey account also gives you access to a variety of optional services (such as accessing the University wireless system), and can also be used to pay library fines online, purchase study notes, as well as log into many other University systems. Some of these services may incur a cost to your account or your department.

What does my UniKey look like?

By default, UniKeys consist of either your first initial followed by the first 3 letters of your surname and 4 random numbers, for example:

abel4192

or your first inital followed by your surname, for example:

jsmith

How do I get a UniKey?

All permanent and contract staff have UniKey accounts created automatically for them once they are registered in the HR System. All students have a UniKey account created automatically for them once they enrol. However, to request the creation of a new UniKey account for staff, contractors or persons affiliated with the University who have not yet enrolled at the University or been processed by HR, please complete this online form.

If you need to find out if you or someone else already has a UniKey, please contact the ICT Helpdesk.

You can also request a role-based UniKey account to be created in cases where a role-specific email alias cannot be used.

Can I change my UniKey?

Once administered, UniKeys cannot be changed unless under special circumstances (eg the login is offensive or there is a legal requirement to do so). Changing a UniKey may result in the temporary loss of access to multiple UniKey services. As such, it inadvisable to change your UniKey and ICT recommends the following alternatives:

  • changing the name that is displayed on your outgoing emails and when you log into different systems
  • adding additional email aliases to your UniKey

If you do require a new UniKey please contact the ICT Helpdesk to discuss reasons and implications for changing your login details.

What does WASM stand for?

WASM stands for Web Authentication and Session Manager and is used to refer to University web pages or online resources that require UniKey authentication.

Can I use my UniKey to sign into all University systems and applications?

While your UniKey provides access to most ICT-supported applications and browser-based services, your local faculty or unit may assign you a different login and password in order to grant you access to local resources such as Faculty-specific applications or desktop computers. This local account and password may not be the same is your UniKey login and password.

A list of systems that can be accessed using your UniKey credentials is available by clicking 'Systems that require UniKey login' in the menu.
