Submission types and guidelines

All submissions should include an abstract or refereed paper.

You may submit an abstract for the following categories of presentation:
- Poster (for Conference Day 1 or 2)
- Poster with pecha kucha (for Conference Day 1 or 2)
- Talk (for Conference Day 1 or 2)
- Talk with refereed paper (for Conference Day 1 or 2)
- Workshop (for Discipline and Workshop Day)

DESCRIPTION OF EACH TYPE OF PRESENTATION

Posters can be presented with or without a request for Pecha Kucha. At ACSME a pecha kucha is a very short talk of 1 minute with 1 slide. Essentially you are giving a pitch for your poster – the idea is to capture the attention of the audience. You can simply talk, but you can also sing, mime, recite verse, use props, or throw food to encourage people to come and see your poster presentation. The pecha kucha session will happen before the poster session on Day 1 or Day 2. The pecha kucha is partiularly suitable for students doing their first conference presentation, but it is a great way for anyone to get experience giving a short talk before moving on to the longer talk format.

Talks can be presented with or without an accompanying refereed paper. Talks at ACSME are generally around 15 minutes long with an additional 5 minutes for questions. The total time for a talk and speaker changeover will not exceed 20 minutes. Talks are always supported with a slide set – they do not include a paper that is read out to the audience. Final details of talk times are dependent on the number of speakers at the conference - details will be sent to confirmed speakers by email. If the number of talk submissions is very large the Program Committee reserves the right to award a poster with pecha kucha or poster opportunity instead of a talk.

Submissions of Refereed Papers will be fully peer-reviewed. Accepted and appropriately revised papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings for ACSME. The Program Committee reserves the right to reject a paper and award a talk, poster with pecha kucha, or poster opportunity instead.

Workshops will be presented in Discipline and Workshop Day (Day 3 of the meeting). Discipline groups are welcome to submit workshop applications. Other presenters are also welcome to submit workshop applications. All presentations for the day must be pre-submitted as Workshop applications. All conference registrants will have the opportunity to return to the conference site and register for workshops of their choice after the workshop timetable is finalised. Workshop presenters will be asked to choose a time limit for their workshop – 1, 2, or 3 hours - as part of the submission process.

TEMPLATE AND FORMATTING GUIDELINES

Abstracts

Abstracts should be between 300-500 words. The purpose of the abstract is to provide clear, detailed and consistently presented information to conference participants. Abstracts should use sub-headings as described in the guidelines for different types of presentations see examples . Abstracts will be peer reviewed by the Program Committee. Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings and will satisfy the Australian DEEWR publication category E2.

Full/Refereed papers
Please use template and these formatting guidelines for full paper submissions.

Refereed papers will include an abstract of no more than 200 words. They will be 5-6 pages long. Upon acceptance and publication in the conference proceedings these papers will satisfy Australian DEEWR publication category E1

Please refer to the 2010-2015 Proceedings for reference. Earlier proceedings had a different format.

Submission process

Submission is Now Closed. The proceedings will be published in an Open Access Journal. Authors will need to sign a form taking responsibility for the content and associated ethics, and giving permission for The Open Journal System to publish all submissions (Abstracts,and refereed papers).

Editorial and review processes

Abstract submissions will be subject to review by the Editorial Board/Program Committee.

Refereed paper submissions will be subject to the full peer-review process according to the following criteria, as appropriate to individual submissions.

  • Clarity of goals
  • Quality and consistency of literature review
  • Adequacy of the method and data analysis
  • Presentation and interpretation of findings, inferences and conclusions
  • Inclusion of appropriate implications
  • Standard of writing including grammar, writing style and clarity of ideas

If appropriate changes are implemented, the work will be published as part of the Conference Proceedings. In some cases, refereed paper submissions maybe published as non refereed papers. A selection of papers will be invited to be further developed and submitted for publication in the International Journal of Innovation in Science and Mathematics Education (IJISME).

Assignment of presentation type

The Program Committee will determine whether authors will be offered an oral or a poster presentation. This determination will aim to ensure a balance of papers that address the conference theme and are from across disciplines. The intent will be to deliver a conference that has wide appeal.
