Information for schools
We invite you to nominate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who would benefit from participating in the Wingara Mura - Bunga Barrabugu Summer Program held at the University of Sydney.
We understand that school results alone are not always a true measure of a student's potential, so we ask you to consider not only students who are academically adept, but also students who are motivated to succeed, committed to their studies, and/or active in their communities.
After the 2014 Wingara Mura - Bunga Barrabugu program, students told us that:
- 98% felt more motivated to achieve at school
- 98% reported they had more knowledge about pathways to university
- 98% said they better understand how their interests can be applied to further study or a career
- 100% had more knowledge about university life.
Participation in the Wingara Mura - Bunga Barrabugu Summer Program incurs no cost to parents or schools, as the University of Sydney covers airfares, food and accommodation. Where four or more students from one school are successful in their application, the University will also support the attendance of a school chaperone.
Please note that a statement of support from their school must accompany each student's application. When completing the statement of support, please include students' strengths both in and out of the classroom and the significance that attendance will play on furthering their education.
Supporting your students application
To assist your students in applying for the Wingara Mura - Bunga Barrabugu Summer Program, please select students who show potential to succeed, and would thrive on the opportunities offered by a University of Sydney on campus educational experience.
In choosing who to recommend, we ask you to consider students who show personal motivation both inside and outside of the classroom, are committed to their studies and play an active part in the life of their community.
Your school will be asked to complete a declaration of support for your student’s application. When completing this declaration please include student’s strengths both in and out of the classroom and the significance their attendance would play on furthering their education.
Can our staff attend?
If your school is planning on applying for a group of students we are willing to provide a teacher or Aboriginal Education Worker from your school the opportunity to attend in the role as chaperon. Chaperons will be provided with accommodation and travel and in return expected to assist with the supervision of students. For more information please contact Bianca Williams.
