International Student Advisers
The support we provide
Our primary role, as International Student Advisers, is to provide support to international students on issues related to student visa, scholarship and general academic progression. We can help you by:
- Discussing with you any concerns you have about these issues.
- Referring you to appropriate support services on campus.
- Generating supporting documentation so that you can apply for a student visa extension.
- Sending you periodic International Office newsletters, updates and event invitations.
We also meet with and provide advice to international students who did not pass 50 per cent or more of their units of study in the preceding semester. Should you be asked to attend a meeting of this type with us, it is most important that you attend. Please read the information below about mandatory student interviews carefully.
How to schedule a meeting with us
We are more than happy to meet with you one-on-one should you wish to discuss your concerns or ask us a question. To schedule a meeting with us, please by email. In your message please provide the following information:
- Three dates and times at which you would be available to meet (in order of preference)
- Your full name and student ID number
- Your telephone number
Providing us with this information will allow us to schedule your meeting efficiently. Most student meetings last approximately half an hour. Please indicate if you think you might need to meet for longer than half an hour so that we can ensure we are available.
Mandatory student interviews
Once academic results are released each semester we send a meeting request to any international student who did not pass 50 per cent or more of his or her units of study in the preceding semester. Student visa holders should be aware that they are required to maintain satisfactory academic progress. For this reason, you may be required to meet with one of the International Student Advisers for a mandatory student interview.
Should you be identified by your Faculty as a student who is not meeting his or her academic progression requirements, you may be placed on the Academic Progression Register. If you are placed on the Register, we will also discuss with you the operation of the Register and the consequences that failing to maintain satisfactory academic progression may have on your student visa.
Please note your Faculty may also contact you regarding your academic progression. You are required to comply with any Faculty advice or warning which may include contacting a Faculty adviser, completing a survey, attending an information session and/or writing a response to your Faculty. However, you are still required to meet with an International Student Adviser.
Newsletter
Each semester, three issues of News for International Students are sent via email to all international students to remind them of important information related to their studies, student visa, welfare, as well as events on and around the campus.
