Director's Welcome

Martijn de Sterke

Welcome to IPOS, the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science. IPOS serves as an umbrella for all research activities in photonics and optics at the University of Sydney. Our current members come from the School of Physics, the School of Electrical and Information Engineering and the University of Sydney Nano Institute (Sydney Nano). Our research encompasses everything from fundamental studies of the interaction of light and sound and nonlinear optical phenomena, to applications as diverse as microwave photonics, (wearable) sensors and astronomical instrumentation, technology that can help address real-world challenges.

Research in Optics and photonics has a long history at the University of Sydney. The University hosted the Optical Fibre Technology Centre (OFTC), the Australian Photonics CRC and more recently the ARC Centre for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS).

Our research is supported by a range of world-class facilities. These include an optical fibre draw tower, unique labs for the experiments in linear, nonlinear and quantum optics, photonics and nanophotonics and plasmonics, photonic engineering, along with a newly constructed facility for astrophotonics. We have access to a state-of-the-art 900 m2 cleanroom, located in the Sydney Nanoscience Hub, which has some of the best equipment in the world.

We have collaborators on all continents and are eager to expand our network even further. We are open to expressions of interest from anyone interested in our research, including potential honours students, research students, research fellows and industry partners.

For more information, please contact me at or contact particular researchers directly.

Best regards,
Martijn de Sterke
