The Institute for Photonics and Optical Science at the University links research and postgraduate teaching programs across the Faculties of Science and Engineering at the University of Sydney to create a world class centre with more than 30 academic and research staff and 40 postgraduate students. The Institute was formally established in 2008 with Professor Ben Eggleton as Director. Our first Masters intake is scheduled for 2009.
This website gives you information about our postgraduate teaching program – Diploma, Masters and PhD – and our research activities. Our program is broadly based, but with a particular focus on planar and fibre-based lightwave devices and circuits, plasmonics and photonics in nature, and on innovative optical and fibre-based techniques for astronomy.
To provide Australia with the innovation, scientists and engineers to maintain and enhance a position of world-leadership in photonics in academia and industry.
To be the region’s leading provider of photonics research and education.
