Applications are invited for a Research Associate position with the School of Physics, The University of Sydney. The successful applicant will join the research team of CUDOS - The Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems, which is an Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence. CUDOS currently has over one hundred researchers and postgraduate students across six university nodes, and is headquartered at the University of Sydney. The appointee will work with Dr. Kuhlmey, Dr. Domachuk and Prof. Eggleton on developing novel refractive index sensors in fibre and planar architectures. The position is funded from an ARC Discovery Grant, and the research has potential applications in Health, Environmental Monitoring, and Bio-Security.

The appointee must have a doctorate in a relevant discipline, with demonstrated skills in experimental guided wave optics and electromagnetic modeling. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, including the capacity to work in a multi-skilled team comprising both theoretical and experimental scientists. Experience with experimental optofluidics in particular for biochemical detection is desirable.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

The position can be offered at Academic Level A or B, commensurate with qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. For appointment at Level B, several years of postdoctoral experience and strong evidence of independent research are also required. Visa sponsorship and relocation support will be provided to any successful overseas candidates.

Level A Remuneration package: $83k - $90k p.a. (which includes a base salary $70k - $76k p.a., leave loading and 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

Level B Remuneration Package: $94k - $112k p.a. (which includes a base salary $80k - $95k p.a., leave loading and 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
