LAWS6032 - Crime Research and Policy

Objectives

• Examine the research methods in the context of criminology and explore the relationship between theory and methodology.
• Assess the production of knowledge about crime.
• Examine the sources and forms of crime data.

Content

Interpreting crime statistics and secondary data; introduction to research: theory method, policy and ethics; quantitative and qualitative research; surveys and interviews; statistics; sampling; standardised scores; bivariate statistics; correlation co-efficients; chi-square, significance testing.

Assessment

• 1 x 2000 Word Research Problem (30%)
• 1 x 5000 Word Research Proposal (70%)

Please note: This unit is compulsory for Master of Criminology (MCrim) and Graduate Diploma in Criminology (GradDipCrim) candidates and co-requisite for other criminology units. The unit replaced LAWS 6032 - Crime Research and Policy 1.

You can credit this unit towards Legal Professional Development (LPD). Units of study that are part of Sydney Law School’s Postgraduate Program meet the necessary Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) of the Law Society of New South Wales and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements of the New South Wales Bar Association. You may complete this unit of study by enrolling on a non-degree basis or on an audit basis only with no assessment via Single Unit Enrolment.
