LAWS6243 - International Law I

Objectives

Gain an introduction to public international law.
Acquire a thorough understanding of the core principles and problems of, and contemporary issues in international law.

Content

Nature and scope of public international law; sources of public international law; international legal personality; the law of treaties; how title to territory is acquired; state jurisdiction in international law; immunity from jurisdiction; state responsibility for international wrongs; dispute settlement; the legality of the use of force.

NB: For those Master of International Law (MIL) and Graduate Diploma in International Law (GradDipIntLaw) candidates who have not completed any previous study in international law this unit is compulsory and must be taken in the first semester of enrolment.

1 x 4,000 Word Essay (50%)
1 x Take-Home Exam (50%)
