Mission Statement

Sydney Law School aspires to provide the best, research-led education in Australia to the most able students. It is committed to a legal education that is global in focus, that encompasses a commitment to the rule of law, and that promotes social justice, community service, professional responsibility and the highest standards of ethical conduct. The Law School acknowledges and respects Aboriginal Custodianship of Country and values the traditions, knowledge and on-going contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of Country, the Gadigal peoples of the Eora Nation, upon whose land the Sydney Law School now stands. As we share our knowledge, teaching, learning, and research practices within this University may we also pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country.

Research Excellence

Sydney Law School’s research is recognised as ‘well above world standard’ by the Australian Research Council 2015 and 2012 Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) outcomes reports. Sydney Law School is an international leader in legal research, led by globally recognised legal educators, world-renowned researchers and highly respected professional practitioners and adjunct faculty.

We place particular emphasis on international and comparative law while also maintaining a strong focus on taxation, commercial, corporate and criminal law. We offer research expertise in specialist areas such as climate and environmental law, as well as health and medical law.

Legal Leadership

Sydney Law School provides graduates with the strong analytical skills, critical thinking skills and communication skills required for professional legal practice and applicable to many other career choices.

We have a reputation for excellence built over more than 150 years of teaching and research. We count among our alumni six Prime Ministers of Australia and four Chief Justices of the High Court of Australia. Sydney was the first Australian law school to admit women, and three of only four female high court judges in Australia graduated from Sydney Law School.

Industry Relevance

Sydney Law School offers one of Australia’s largest and most specialised coursework and research programs in law, with 80 percent of Masters units of study offered on an intensive basis. The coursework program reflects the latest developments within the practice and profession of law. Leading Australian and international practitioners are invited to teach to their expertise our specialist units of study.

Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiative, Professional Plus+, offers busy professionals the chance to sample our program for CPD points or engage with our Law and Business Seminar Series.

International Engagement

We are part of a highly regarded group of international law schools that includes Oxford, Cambridge and Tsinghua. Our students have an unrivalled opportunity to gain international experience and transfer the skills and knowledge they learn at the University of Sydney into an international career.

The Sydney LLB and JD are the only Australian law degrees that require students to complete two units of study in international law. Our exchange program includes partnerships with law schools across North America, Europe and Asia, while our offshore program offers Australia’s most comprehensive collection of overseas intensive units of study in law.
