Biographical details

Professor Chester Brown is Professor of International Law and International Arbitration at the Faculty of Law, University of Sydney; a Barrister at 7 Selborne Chambers, Sydney, and an overseas associate of Essex Court Chambers, London, and Maxwell Chambers, Singapore. He teaches and researches in the fields of public international law, international dispute settlement, international arbitration, international investment law, and private international law. He also maintains a practice in these fields, and has been involved as counsel in proceedings before the International Court of Justice, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, inter-State and investor-State arbitral tribunals, as well as in international commercial arbitrations.

Professor Brown joined the Faculty of Law in 2009 as an Associate Professor. He previously served as Assistant Legal Adviser at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2007-2009), and prior to this, he was a Senior Associate in the International Law and International Arbitration Group of Clifford Chance LLP, London (2004-2007). He has also previously served as Part-time Lecturer in International Law at Queen Mary College, University of London, and as a College Supervisor in International Law at Trinity Hall and at Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge. Professor Brown has held a Visiting Fellowship at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (2006), was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School (2011), and was a Herbert Smith Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge (2013). He also co-teaches (with Professor David Williams QC) International Arbitration on the LLM programme at the University of Auckland.

He is the author of A Common Law of International Adjudication (OUP, 2007), a major study on the applicable procedure and remedies before international courts and tribunals, which was awarded the American Society of International Law’s Certificate of Merit; co-author of The International Arbitration Act 1974: A Commentary (Lexis-Nexis, 2011); co-editor of Evolution in Investment Treaty Law and Arbitration (CUP, 2011), which was awarded OGEMID’s Prize for “Book of the Year 2011”; and editor of Commentaries on Selected Model Investment Treaties (OUP, 2013). He is the Associate Editor (Notes) of the ICSID Review – Foreign Investment Law Journal, and the Australia and New Zealand reporter for the International Law Reports.

Professor Brown serves as Associate Dean (International Students) at the Faculty of Law, and is the Coordinator of the Master of International Law and Graduate Diploma in International Law programmes at the University of Sydney. He is also the Faculty Coordinator for the University of Sydney’s participation in the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition.

Professor Brown is admitted to legal practice in New South Wales, Victoria, and England and Wales. He is a graduate of the Universities of Melbourne, Oxford, and Cambridge, and he speaks French and German.
