Brief Biographical Detail

Pat O’Malley is a Honorary Professor, and previously was Canada Research Chair in Criminology and Criminal Justice in Ottawa. Most of his work has focused on issues of risk and security, especially in relation to crime prevention, drug harm minimisation, insurance and insurance law.

Most recent work has focused on the centrality of ‘mundane governance’ that shapes much of life but often lies below the horizon for socio-legal researchers. This work includes an ARC funded project on the development of risk-based approaches to fire safety and security in urban areas, and another on the development of risk-based approaches to traffic regulation.

A second and related major strand of research has focused on the importance and implications of money sanctions in criminal, civil and regulatory law, focus of a 2009 monograph on The Currency of Justice. A recent paper on this issue, focussing on the impact of monetization and informatics on key areas of justice was awarded the 2010 Radzinowicz Prize by The British Journal of Criminology for the article which in that year made the greatest contribution to the development of criminology .

He has be awarded various professional honours including the American Society of Criminology’s 2000 Sheldon and Eleanor Gleuck Award for contributions to international criminology, and distinguished lectureships at Amherst College, the University of Toronto, Leipzig University, New York University and the Victoria University of Wellington. In 2012 he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA).
