Brief Biographical Details

Dr Stefan Gruber is a Lecturer at Sydney Law School, where he inter alia coordinates all legal research units for the undergraduate and graduate law degrees. He is also active as a legal practitioner and consultant, and is a member of the Chamber of Lawyers, Frankfurt am Main. Stefan was educated at the Universities of Sydney, Frankfurt, Mainz, and at Harvard Law School, and holds degrees in law, philosophy, and political science. He also held visiting positions at the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law at the University of Ottawa, the Centre for Comparative and Public Law at the University of Hong Kong, and Renmin Law School of China in Beijing.

Stefan’s regional focus is on East and Southeast Asia and particularly China. His current research concentrates on sustainable development law and policy, the conservation of cultural heritage and social change, and international and comparative environmental law. Another major focus is on the illicit trafficking of cultural property and other forms of art crime, their prevention and prosecution, and the restitution of illegally exported objects. Stefan further researches and publishes in the field of armed conflicts.

He has served on the submissions team of the Harvard Journal of International Law and the editorial board of the Harvard Asia Pacific Review, and currently serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Law, Justice and Development. Stefan has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Network (APRU DSN) and presently serves as the Director of Research and Development.
