This edition of JuristDiction looks at the evolution of health law, and includes thought-provoking articles and profiles of alumni working in the field as well as the latest faculty, student and alumni news.

Highlights of this edition include:

  • Professor Roger Magnusson looks at the history of tertiary teaching and research in health law and the growth of specialisations in this area.;
  • Dr Arlie Loughnan considers the issue of madness and crime in the context of the Breivik trial in Norway;
  • Emeritus Professor Terry Carney discusses mental health and guardianship models focusing on different priorities in developing and developed countries;
  • Professor Cameron Stewart considers the legal and ethical issues surrounding the storage of umbilical cord blood and the state of the current debate in this area;
  • Feature article on the career and future hopes of Professor Larry Gostin, a visiting Professor of Global Health Law at Sydney Law School, who has dedicated his life to improving the status of mentally ill people and ending health inequality; and
  • Profiles of alumni, including The Hon Peter Garling, now a Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, whose Special Commission of Inquiry into Acute Care Services in NSW Public Hospitals represents an important prescription for improving the quality and affordability of health care services in NSW and beyond
