Exchange Opportunities

The University of Sydney has an extensive range of student exchange programs with universities throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Many students have participated in these programs and have found them to be an exciting and challenging way of broadening their academic horizons and enriching their experience in different environments and cultures.

The exchange programs offer students the opportunity to complete a semester of study overseas and to receive credit for this study towards their degree at the University of Sydney.

Joseph Cayzer – National University of Singapore Exchange

NUS stood out from the rest of the exchange destinations as it offered a strong academic heritage, exposure to a thriving economy, and was one of only two exchange partners located in South-East Asia. In addition, Singapore is unique as a nation in terms of its history, culture, and governance, and as such I was thrilled when I received my letter of acceptance.

On arriving, I was struck by how vibrant the student community was. NUS prides itself as an international university and my fellow exchange students came from a wide range of countries and backgrounds. This made for a great study experience, as class discussions would result in a range of viewpoints being considered. It also ensured a very social semester, and has left me with many good friends and professional contacts from around the world.

The study load was similar to that at Sydney. Classes were taught in seminars of up to 30 people, though a strong focus on the Socratic Method meant thorough preparation was a must. My subjects were particularly interesting – they all had an international focus, using materials both from Singapore and across the common law world, so all of the material I studied is applicable back in Australia and around the world.

And on top of it all Singapore is a great place to live. It’s a constantly growing country, with a rich multicultural heritage that provides an interesting comparison with Sydney. The strong sense of traditional culture combined with the recent economic boom means there is much to see within the city itself (and fantastic food!), while the proximity of local countries and ease of travel means you can leave class for the week and be on holiday overseas within a couple of hours.

I learned a great deal on exchange, both in the classroom and beyond, and had a fantastic time to boot. I’d thoroughly recommend exchange to anyone considering it.
