Support for students with a disability

Your right to access learning on the same basis as any other student is protected by law. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 recognises that disability may be permanent, intermittent or temporary; acquired or lifelong; visible or invisible.

Disability Services helps students who have a disability to access reasonable adjustments, and provides advice to prospective students about support services. They offer a range of services and adjustments to help you achieve your academic goals and minimise the impact a disability can have on your experience at university. Help and support is provided by Disability Services Officers and our School Disability Liaison Officer.

University Disability Action Plan

The University of Sydney has a Disability Action Plan 2013-18 which aims to further the human rights and inherent dignity of all students, staff and visitors to the University. This is the University’s third disability action plan since the first in 1999.

The Disability Action Plan has six key objectives to ensure:

  1. The University incorporates the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities in all policies and planning.
  2. The University of Sydney is a tertiary education provider of choice for all students.
  3. The University is an employer of choice for people with disabilities.
  4. The University’s communication and digital environment is accessible to people with disabilities.
  5. The University provides an accessible built environment to everyone.
  6. The University provides leadership to the community in developing an inclusive Australian society.

The plan is a mark of the University’s recognition that people with disabilities have the same human rights and inherent dignity as everyone else. The University of Sydney is committed to working proactively together to ensure people with disabilities have the opportunity to realise their full potential and capabilities.
