Orientation for the Mentoring Program for LLB and JD Students

Mentoring Program

The Orientation Mentoring Program aims to help new students transition into study and life at Sydney Law School. The program has a social focus, and is an opportunity for students to make friends and build networks they can call on during their degree.

New students are placed into a small group with a senior student Mentor who will pass on advice and tips, introduce the basics of Law School, and be able to help with questions or issues that may arise in the first semester.

The Peer Mentoring Program will help you to settle into the faculty by:

  • Meeting other students
  • Building networks and study groups
  • Understanding the University and Law school

Your Mentor

The mentor will be a more senior student who will work with a group of 5-10 mentees. The aim will be to try and match you with a mentor who is in a similiar program of study. The mentor will help you by:

  • giving you information about all the services on campus
  • organising two mentoring group activities and introducing you to other students
  • inviting you to social and academic events
  • giving you general information about life in Sydney
  • providing someone you can talk to about your experiences and studies

The mentor is not responsible for:

  • tutoring
  • give you academic advice

How to join the mentoring program

All students will have an opportunity to join the Mentoring Program at their Orientation Session. After those lectures, all students will be invited to join a mentoring group and will be taken on a Law School tour and have their first session with their mentor. There is no need to pre-register – just be there on the day.

If you miss the Orientation Session you can come along to the Tug-of-War in Week 1. Introduce yourself to a Mentor (who will be wearing a blue shirt with "Law Mentor" printed on the back) and ask them any questions.
