The Sir Percy Spender Visiting Fellowship was developed to recognise and support established researchers of high international standing who wish to make a genuine contribution to the research environment at Sydney Law School.

Professor Jane C. Ginsburg (USA)
Jane Ginsburg is the Morton L. Janklow Professor of Literary and Artistic Property Law at Columbia University School of Law, and Faculty Co-Director of its Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts. She teaches Copyright Law, International Copyright Law, Trademarks Law, Legal Methods, and Statutory Interpretation, and is an author of casebooks in all five subjects, as well as of many books, articles and book chapters on domestic and international copyright and trademark law.

Professor Damiano Canale (Italy)
Damiano Canale is a Professor in the Department of Law at Bocconi University in Milan. His research interests include general jurisprudence; legal argumentation; biolaw; critical thinking; and digital ethics. During his visit, Damiano worked on a research project entitled 'Against the moralisation of jurisprudence'.

The George Flannery Visiting Fellowship was developed to recognise and support outstanding Early to Mid-Career Researchers who wish to visit and collaborate with the University of Sydney Law School. 

Associate Professor Ashwini Vasanthakumar (Canada)
Ashwini Vasanthakumar is an Associate Professor and Queen’s National Scholar in Legal and Political Philosophy at Queen’s Law School. Prior to Queen’s, she held positions at King’s College London, University of York, University of Oxford, and Jindal Global Law School. Ashwini's research explores political authority, membership, and obligation. During her visit, Ashwini worked on a draft manuscript of her second monograph, which examines victims’ duties in the context of their oppression.


Associate Professor Kimihiro Hino (Japan)

Kimihiro Hino is an Associate Professor from the Department of Urban Engineering at the University of Tokyo. His research interests include Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), housing, and urban planning. He currently serves as an adviser for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Fukuoka Prefectural Police. During his visit, Kimihiro will be developing case studies to highlight how active planning and crime prevention through environmental design principles are integrated and operate in harmony.

Dr Tim Bowley (Australia)
Tim Bowley is a corporate law researcher at Monash University and an experienced corporate lawyer. His research explores contemporary regulatory debates in corporate and securities law, with a focus on the role of shareholders in corporate governance. Tim's PhD on shareholder activism was shortlisted for the Australian Legal Research Best PhD Award in 2020. Prior to commencing his academic career, Tim was a partner in a national Australian law firm and practised in London at one of the leading ‘Magic Circle’ firms. Tim is currently participating in several international research projects examining institutional investor stewardship, ESG activism by institutional investors, and legal rights for activist shareholders to access information regarding their target companies.

Dr Yixian Li (China)
Yixian Li is a researcher and lecturer at Yunnan University, China. During her visit, Yixian is undertaking research on the protection of human genetic information.

Judge Kohei Sasaki (Japan)
Judge Kohei Sasaki from the Yamagata District and Family Court is the ANJeL Japanese Judge in residence. During his visit, Judge Sasaki will compare especially (1) the role that judges should play in arranging settlements in civil litigation from the perspective of negotiation studies, (2) how issues should be sorted out and examined, to enable early resolution of civil lawsuits, and (3) the issue of discrimination against minorities and their rights. 

Associate Professor Andy Schmulow (Australia)
Andy Schmulow is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Wollongong. Andy is an internationally recognised authority on conduct in financial markets (in particular "Treating Customers Fairly" legislative regimes) and the Twin Peaks model of financial regulation. During his time at the Ross Parsons Centre, Andy plans to undertake and disseminate research into the Treating Customers Fairly regime for financial consumer protection and well-being. Andy also has an interest in regulator efficacy and corporate governance and culture and regularly appears before Senate Inquiries to give evidence, such as the current inquiry into ASIC and the inquiry into the sale of tax secrets by PwC and other forms of misconduct by consulting firms.

Professor Mark Dawson (Germany)
Mark Dawson is a Professor of EU Law and Governance at the Hertie School in Berlin. His research focuses on the relationship between law and public policy, particularly in relation to the law of the EU. He has published several monographs on this subject as well as a recent textbook with Cambridge University Press titled ‘EU law and governance’. During his visit, Mark undertook research on the legal mobilisation of populist political movements. 

Mr Michele Di Vita (Italy)
Michele is a PhD student in renewable energy law at IUSS Pavia. Michele has also worked in law firms focusing on energy and utilities. During his visit, Michele undertook further PhD research on renewable energy and sustainable development law and worked with Penny Crossley on other related projects.

Associate Professor Shohei Eto (Japan)
Shohei Eto is an Associate Professor of Law at Hitotsubashi University in Japan. He graduated Magna cum laude from the University of Tokyo, Law School in 2008 and graduated from Columbia Law School in 2012. He was an Associate Attorney at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu from 2009-2011 and a Fulbright Scholar in 2011. His primary research interest is constitutional law.

Dr Yarran Hominh (USA)
Yarran Hominh is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Bard College. He has a PhD from Columbia University and an LLM from the University of Sydney. During his visit, Yarran worked on his current book project, ‘The Problem of Unfreedom’.

Mr Heikki Jaatinen (Finland)
Heikki Jaatinen is a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Turku in Finland. Heikki was previously an M&A Partner at a leading Nordic law firm, Hannes Snellman. During his visit, Heikki undertook research on the requirement of a negligent corporate culture as a prerequisite for corporate criminal liability.

Associate Professor Jorge Feliu Rey (Spain)
Jorge Feliu Rey is an Associate Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Between 2022-2023, Jorge was an academic visitor at the University of Cambridge. Jorge has been a Fellow of the European Law Institute as well as an Arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration of the Official Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madrid since 2015. He was a Nacional Special Reporter for the ADR in the Enforcement of Security Interest and Insolvency at the International Academy of Comparative Law between 2020-2022. Jorge has also served as a representative of ASADIP and CEDEP before the UNCITRAL working Group VI and IV on electronic commerce (project on AI and automation in international trade). During their visit, Teresa and Jorge worked on a project about the use of algorithms and AI systems in decision-making in the contract lifecycle and for contractual purposes.

Dr Meng Jin (China)
Meng Jin is an Associate Professor in the Law School of East China University of Political Science and Law. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses related to Chinese law, jurisprudence, legislation, and legal methods. Her main research fields are legislation, human rights law, law and economics and legal theory.

Professor Alex Mills (UK)
Alex Mills is a Professor of Public and Private International Law at University College London. Professor Mills’ research covers a range of issues in and around the fields of Public International Law and Private International Law. His research also encompasses International Commercial Arbitration, with a focus on issues of jurisdiction, admissibility, applicable law, and the relationship between courts and arbitral tribunals.

Judge Saori Miyazaki (Japan)
Judge Saori Miyazaki is from the Takasaki Branch of Maebashi District Court, Takasaki Branch of Maebashi Family Court, Takasaki Summary Court, and the Supreme Court of Japan. Judge Saori Miyazaki was an ANJeL Japanese Judge in residence.

Professor Kuei-Jung Ni (Taiwan)
Kuei-Jung Ni is a Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Trans-Pacific Partnership and Transnational Trade Laws at the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. During his visit, Professor Ni undertook a comparative study of Front-of-Pack Label (FOPL) models and engaged in an on-site survey of the approach and progress of the Australian Health Star Rating (HSR) system.

Dr Sirja-Leena Penttinen (Finland)
Sirja-Leena Penttinen is a Senior Lecturer at UEF Law School and a Legal Advisor to the Energy Authority (Finland). Sirja-Leena previously served as Assistant Director of the Tulane Center for Energy Law as well as an Adjunct Professor at Tulane University Law School. She has published widely on different aspects of international and European energy law, particularly on the implications of the sustainable energy transition to markets and investments. During their visit, Kim and Sirja-Leena conducted research on hydrogen regulation in Australia as part of a comparative research project on hydrogen regulation in Europe, the US, and Australia.

Associate Professor Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell (Spain)
Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell is an Associate Professor of Commercial Law at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Between 2022-2023, Teresa was an academic visitor at the University of Cambridge (Gonville & Caius College). She was formerly a Sir Roy Goode Scholar at UNIDROIT in Rome (2021-2022) and held the Chair of Excellence at Oxford University, Harris Manchester College (2017-2018). Teresa is a member of three EU Expert Groups assisting the European Commission on AI, B2B data sharing, and the online platform economy. Teresa is an Arbitrator of the Spanish Court of Arbitration and has been a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2023. Teresa has served as a Delegate of Spain and an Expert before UNCITRAL and UNIDROIT regarding AI, data transactions, and digital assets. During their visit, Teresa and Jorge worked on a project about the use of algorithms and AI systems in decision-making in the contract lifecycle and for contractual purposes.

Associate Professor Vivek Sehrawat (India)
Vivek Sehrawat is an Associate Professor at Mahindra University in India. During his visit, Vivek worked on a research project entitled ‘Autonomous weapon systems and meaningful human control’. Vivek’s research interests include national security, international humanitarian law, international law, and tort law. Before joining Mahindra University, he was a founding faculty member at BML Munjal University. Between 2018-2019, Vivek was a visiting research scholar at the University of California, Davis.

Professor Gerry Simpson (UK)
Gerry Simpson is a Professor of Public International Law at LSE Law School. In addition to writing numerous books, Gerry is the Joint Editor-in-Chief of The London Review of International Law and a regular essayist and contributor for Arena Magazine. During his visit, Gerry delivered the keynote address at the Sydney Centre for International Law (SCIL) International Law Year in Review Conference.

Professor Kim Talus (Finland)
Kim Talus is a Professor of European Energy Law at UEF Law School (University of Eastern Finland) and the founder and co-Director of its Center for Climate, Energy and Environmental Law (CCEEL). He is also a part-time Professor of Energy Law at the University of Helsinki and a Partner at Swiss-based Energy and Regulation Partners. From 2018 to 2023, he was the James McCulloch Chair in Energy Law at Tulane University and the founding Director of the Tulane Center for Energy Law. During their visit, Kim and Sirja-Leena conducted research on hydrogen regulation in Australia as part of a comparative research project on hydrogen regulation in Europe, the US, and Australia.

Professor Pierre Thielbörger (Germany)
Pierre Thielbörger is a Professor of Public International Law and Executive Director of the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV), one of Germany’s leading international law institutes. He is co-editor of several peer reviewed international law journals and serves on the advisory board of the German Institute for Human Rights as well as on the German Foreign Ministry's Advisory Board for the United Nations. During his visit, Pierre conducted research on business and human rights (including due human rights diligence during armed conflict), socio-economic rights (in particular the rights to water and sanitation) as well as on the role of different human rights bodies.

Professor Kimberley Trapp (UK)
Kimberley Trapp is a Professor of Public International Law at University College London. Kimberley’s research covers a range of subject matters including state responsibility; the use of force in international relations; international humanitarian law; international terrorism; and the judicial settlement of disputes. During her visit, Kimberley collaborated with Professor Ben Saul on an OUP Elements monograph exploring the regime interaction between international counter-terrorism law and IHL, IHRL and the law on the use of force.
