Sydney Law School in Europe accredited by Solicitors Regulation Authority, UK Sydney Law School is now an Accredited External Provider for the purposes of the Continuing Professional Development Scheme (CPD) by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in the United Kingdom. Unless otherwise stated, future unit offerings will be accredited by the SRA and each unit of study may offer up to 22 CPD hours for solicitors practicing in the United Kingdom. - October 2010

The 40th Annual Workshop on Commercial and Consumer Law, Toronto Professor John Stumbles sat on a panel of speakers including Professor Ray Goode. John spoke about the new Australian Personal Property Securities legislation. Many of the papers presented will be published in the forthcoming 50th volume of the Canadian Business Law Journal in early 2011. - October 2010

The Parsons Centre - Corporate Law Seminar Series Downtown. Andrew Tuch, Sydney Law school and Harvard Law School addressed the topic Recent Developments in Investment Banking, Chris van Homrigh (ASIC) and Professor Ron Masulis (Vanderbilt University and UNSW School of Banking and Finance) provided commentary on the seminar which considered recently adopted financial regulatory reforms and other significant developments in investment banking in the US. The seminar also considered possible implications for Australia as a result of the changes. - 9 August 2010

Parsons Centre guest, Professor Reinier Kraakman from Harvard University spoke on the topic Fraud on the Market in the US - can it be fixed?, Held at the newly refurbished Federal Court of Australia a panel comprising Belinda Gibson (ASIC) and Greg Golding (Mallesons Stephen Jaques)
engaged with the audience in a wide ranging discussion following the address. - 3 August 2010

Journal of Contract Law - Contractual Indemnities Conference. A number of Parsons Centre members including John Carter, Professor Barbara McDonald, Associate Professor Greg Tolhurst and Wayne Courtney delivered papers at the seminar. They were joined by Adjunct Faculty members Don Robertson, Kevin Lindgren QC and Michael Furmston and the Opening Address was delivered by Sir Anthony Mason. The Parsons Centre continues to be actively involved with the Commercial Law Association. Professor John Stumbles has also given a number of presentations this year in confunction with the CLA. - 30 July 2010

The Parsons Centre - Corporate Law Downtown Seminar Series 2010. Comparing CEO Employment Contract Provisions: Differences between Australia and the US. Professor Randall Thomas of Vanderbilt Law School was joined by commentators John Colvin and Bill Koeck. Professor Thomas based his seminar on a study that compares CEO employment contracts in the US and Australia. A visitor of the Parsons Centre, Professor Thomas has recenly published in a range of areas at the intersection of law and finance, including hedge fund and institutional investor activism, shareholder voting, executive compensation and shareholder litigation. - 28 June 2010

Resources Super Profits Tax. The Parsons Centre hosted this seminar to discuss the issues raised by the proposed resource super profits tax. While the RSPT has received extensive media coverage, much of this has been at a political level with the technical design of the tax receiving less public analysis. The Jason McDonald and Philip Daniel were guest speakers and Associate Professor Russell Ross and Amrt McIntrye provided commentary. At the conclusion of the seminar there was a book launch of Daniel, Keen & McPherson (eds), The Taxation of Peteroleum, Minerals, Principles, Problems and Practice. - 24 June 2010

Celebrity and the Law, by Patricia Loughlan, Barbara McDonald & Robert Van Krieken was launched to an audience of over 100 guests at the Sydney Law School. Richard Ackland delivered an entertaining official launch. The book can be purchased from Federation Press. - 15 June 2010

Takeovers Panel Conference, The Parsons Centre assembled a group of leading experts on takeover law and practice for this day long conference. Registrants and speakers engaged in valuable dialougue in reviewing the Panel's achievements and prospects. A book containing the conference papers and commentary will be published shortly by the Centre. - 4 June 2010

International Monetary Fund Associate Professor Rebecca Millar travelled to Nigeria for 10 days under the auspices of the International Monetary Fund, to assist the Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service in the drafting of the new VAT law. - June 2010

International Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Edited by KE Lindgren was released at the Federal Court of Australia. Containing papers from the Federal Court 2009 this publication, the 9th in our series, is available for purchase from the Ross Parsons Centre or through Sydney University Press for $110.00 (inclusive of GST plus postage). - 10 May 2010
