The Sydney Centre for International Law is a leading centre of international law research and policy in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Centre members have worked on a range of international law projects in the region, including in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Vanuatu, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, India, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Iraq, and Kuwait. Centre members have consulted to various United Nations bodies, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and numerous governments (including public officials, diplomats, military, police, lawyers and judges) and non-government aid and donor agencies.

Legal training and education
Members of the Sydney Centre have extensive experience in designing and delivering practical legal training and education to a variety of different audiences, including government ministries and departments, foreign services and diplomats, militaries, police forces, non-government organisations, international organisations, and refugees, among others. In particular, the Centre has extensive training expertise in:
- international human rights law;
- international humanitarian law and military law;
- international criminal law;
- international refugee law;
- anti-terrorism and security law;
- international economic law;
- international law of the sea; and
- World Trade Organization Law.
Research consultancy
Centre members are available to undertake major research or policy studies, reports and reviews in a wide range of international law and law reform areas.
Expert opinions, advice and litigation
Centre members are available to provide expert opinions, legal opinions and strategic advice on litigation. A number of Centre members are practising barristers in Australia and in international tribunals, and some have extensive experience in international public interest litigation, including with the Oxford Pro Bono Publico and the Centre for Constitutional Rights in New York. Centre members have been involved in cases in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the Israeli Supreme Court, the South African courts, the Australian High Court, and the US Military Commissions at Guantanamo Bay, among others. Recent projects
- Safeguarding Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Nepal: in 2008-09 the Centre provided human rights training in Nepal to Nepalese Police, Armed Police, public prosecutors and public defenders, in partnership with Kathmandu School of Law
- Rehabilitation Assistance Facility for Iraq: from 2007-2010 the Centre has provided periodic training in Sydney on international law to senior public servants from numerous Iraqi government departments.
