LAWS6149 - Legal Pluralism in Southeast Asia (12 Credit Points)

This unit introduces students to the legal systems of Southeast Asia, focusing on Indonesia and Malaysia. The unit surveys a very wide range of topical legal issues from the region - from human rights and development, environmental law, to the practice of commercial law, including Islamic banking. The unit emphasises legal pluralism - that is, the operation of different bodies of law for particular groups in those countries, colonial, national, Islamic and customary law - and compares how countries in Southeast Asia have handled it.

Please note: This unit will be taught offshore with the cooperation of Gadjah Mada University (Yogyakarta, Indonesia) and International Islamic University (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). These institutions will provide guest lecturers. These institutions can be contacted through Associate Professor Simon Butt and Associate Professor Salim Farrar.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

You can credit this unit towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Units of study that are part of Sydney Law School’s Postgraduate Program meet the necessary Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) of the Law Society of New South Wales and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements of the New South Wales Bar Association. You may complete this unit of study by enrolling on a non-degree basis or on an audit basis only with no assessment via Single Unit Study.
