Dealing with students in distress

Many of us have roles that involve contact with students. This could be in a formal situation such as in a lecture theatre, or more casually, such as dealing with student enquiries as part of an administrative duty.

Some of us will encounter students who may be in need of professional assistance and this session aims to provide you with options and resources for dealing with these situations.

If you have ever wanted to offer help to a student but have been unsure of what to say, where to send them or even whether you should raise the issue, then you should attend this short practical session facilitated by a counsellor from the Student Counselling Service.

Topics include:

  • The sorts of problems that arise when dealing with distressed students
  • Signs that a student might not be coping
  • Setting boundaries and making referrals
  • Resources available for students

Target Audience

Staff who work in student-facing roles and anyone interested in learning more about the support services for students at the University.
