Access to e-resources and Help

Getting Started

You'll be prompted to authenticate by the login screen pictured below, when you first click a link to open a resource - (try our subject guides, database lists, the e-journal portal or e-book list, Library catalogue, or CrossSearch).

  • You shouldn't be prompted to login more than once per browser session. Check your cookie settings if this happens.
  • Most students automatically receive a UniKey, which you use to authenticate. Staff may optionally use the Library Borrower Number on their ID card.
  • The "Library e-resources" authentication system isn't the same authentication system as MyLoans - (your Library borrrowing record).

Check your browser settings

The default settings in your browser can make the authentication system prompt you to login more often than neccessary.
To prevent this, check your browser's default settings - you may need to do this after every browser update you download, as the settings will be restored to the browser defaults. Ensure your browser's cookie settings allow third party cookies.

Should I login with Unikey or Library Borrower Number?

  • With some exceptions, all students and staff members receive a UniKey automatically and should use the UniKey login option.
  • Some student groups, who don't have a current Library patron record, may not use their UniKeys, and should arrange a temporary library card and use Library Borrower Number login. Apply for your card: Postgraduate / Honours Students
  • LPAB students need to first self register for a UniKey Account.
  • Staff & University Title Holders may optionally use Library Borrower Number login. University Title Holders apply for your card
  • Which students use Library Borrower Number login?
If you are a postgraduate student who has submitted a thesis and still need library services to complete your degree, a postgraduate research or coursework student whose candidature has been suspended, or a student intending to study a postgraduate or honours degree, you can arrange continued access by applying for a temporary Library card through the Campus Card Centre. Winter or Summer School students with no UniKey may also apply. You then use Borrower Number on your temporary card.

Troubleshooting

1. If you can’t login, try these steps first

  • Firstly, don't use Autocomplete. If your browser is automatically filling out or partially completing one or more of the boxes on the login screen, don't accept what it inserts. Delete the content and type it in afresh.
  • Delete your browser cookies and cache/temporary internet files. For help, check your browser's help, or go to WikiHow: How to clear your browser's cache and cookies. If you are using a tablet, go to Settings and clear your browser's History, & Cookies and data.
  • Ensure your browser's cookie settings allow third party cookies.
  • If you are using a bookmark to access the Library webpages or a specific resource, delete the bookmark and start afresh by going directly to the Library website.

2. Login help for UniKey users - I'm getting "Unsuccessful Login Attempt"

  • Firstly, check the troubleshooting above under "If you can’t login, try these steps first"
  • Even if your UniKey is working elsewhere, Synchronise your UniKey password, wait 20 minutes, then try to login again.
  • If you still have a problem, Change your UniKey password, wait 20 minutes, then try to login again.
  • For forgotten passwords, or to check that your UniKey account is active, and your password is correct contact the ICT Helpdesk.

  • If you're being asked to login too often - you should only need to login once per browser session - check your browser cookie settings and allow third party cookies.

Access to eReadings

I'm getting an error message when I try to access an eReading

Every link to an eReading should use the Library Authentication system, but occasionally this is omitted.
When this is the case, you may get a login prompt or "access denied" message from the article publisher's site, when you try to access it. Please contact the Library - include the title of your item and the course code or name, so that we can fix the link for you.
