Helmholtz was a major influence on physics through his formulation of laws of thermodynamics. His importance in medicine resides his investigations of the perception of light (he invented the ophthalmoscope - an instrument designed for examination of the interior of the eye) and sound. This book is concerned with his studies of "pure" tones.
