The images displayed on this site were produced by Dr John Walker during his career as a medical parasitologist. After completing a science degree at the University of Sydney, Dr Walker began working in Medical Parasitology at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, University of Sydney in 1967. The work included diagnostic parasitology and epidemiological surveys of gastrointestinal parasites, malaria and filariasis in Australia and neighbouring countries.
In 1986, Dr Walker transferred to Westmead Hospital, Sydney, as Senior Lecturer in Parasitology in the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. A major emphasis of the work at Westmead was the provision of malaria reference laboratory services and maintenance of a register of malaria cases imported into New South Wales. During this time Dr Walker was involved in a malaria control program in Vietnam and served on the National Arbovirus and Malaria Advisory Committee of the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia.
Dr Walker retired in 2005 but has retained his interest in parasitology, most recently in collaborating, with Dr Harsha Sheorey and Dr Beverley-Ann Biggs, on the second edition of Clinical Parasitology, a practical handbook for Medical Practitioners and Microbiologists.
