We have put together some helpful information to assist in furthering your PhD and Masters enquiry. Please make sure you read through our Masters and PhD Information pack for more information.

MBI PhD and Masters enquiry document



Your initial application to MBI should include:

1. Your updated CV – be sure to include your personal, educational and work experience details. Also include previous research experience and publication outputs.

2. The name, email address and contact number of at least two referees.

3. A copy of your official transcript and grading page.

4. A 1-2 page outline of your research interests and/or a draft PhD topic proposal.

Research Supervisor Connect

Some general information on current research topics and potential supervisors are provided on the University of Sydney Research Supervisor Connect. Research Supervisor Connect matches your research interests to available PhD and Masters research opportunities and supervisors.

Research Supervisor Connect searches can be done either by Faculty (eg: Sydney Medical School) or Topic (eg: tuberculosis, virus, fungi etc).

In addition, MBI has a wide network of affiliated supervisors and we will try to link you with the appropriate research group.

Students should visit the Sydney Medical School future research student enquiries page and complete the online form to help match suitable supervisors and projects for you.

Once a supervisor has been secured, the "PhD Application Pathway" document will help you in submitting your application to the University.


Masters Degree

Not all students will be eligible to undertake a PhD with the University of Sydney. Students may like to consider a Masters Degree (either by coursework or by research) with the University of Sydney. The following may be relevant:

Master of International Public Health

International public health is concerned with public health in low and middle-income countries. Our staff have extensive international experience working in countries like Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam in Asia, and Ghana, Kenya and Ugandan in sub-Saharan Africa. Our courses cover control of infectious diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS , as well as the new epidemic of non-communicable diseases.

Our teaching staff are active within the international public health community and have practical experience working in developing countries. They regularly provide advice on graduate career placement and can facilitate a work attachment in an international environment as part of your degree.

You will be in a global classroom. Our students come from all over the world, giving you the opportunity to share experiences and learn from your peers as well as from your teachers.

Master of Philosophy (Medicine)

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is aimed at those who intend to pursue careers in medical or health research or who wish to upgrade their qualifications to give them a competitive edge in their employment by demonstrating superior ability and some research experience. It may also be used as a stepping stone to commencing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The MPhil is a research degree in which students undertake supervised research leading to the production of a thesis.

The faculty may admit an applicant that has obtained at least a credit in the highest course available in the subject or subjects relevant to the proposed course of advanced study and research.

Full-time MPhil students have a minimum of 1 year and maximum of 2 years to submit a thesis for examination. Part-time students have a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years to submit.

Master of Medicine (Infection and Immunity)

The Master of Medicine (Infection and Immunity) is designed for medical professionals who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases, infection control and the functioning of the immune system. The course aims to produce graduates who can effectively participate in future health care or research programs in infection or immunity anywhere in the world.

The integrated scientific approach taken in this course reflects the current state of knowledge regarding infectious microorganisms and their pathogenesis, immunology and the immune responses to infection, and the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases. The course covers the principles and practices advocated for the effective prevention or minimisation of infectious diseases in hospitals and laboratories, among the general community, and during disease outbreaks. It also provides you with training in state-of-the-art laboratory techniques used in the disciplines of infectious diseases and immunology.

Master of HIV, STI’s and Sexual Health

The Master of HIV, STIs & Sexual Health provides a comprehensive, evidence-based, inter-professional and research-intensive learning experience that meets the needs of Australian and international students working in a range of disciplines related to HIV, STIs and Sexual Health. It also creates opportunities to seamlessly transition to research candidature.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are major public health concerns in both developed and developing countries, with millions of adults and children becoming infected each year. Effective prevention, diagnosis, management and surveillance of HIV and STIs require a thorough understanding of issues such as microbiology, immunology, diagnostics, therapeutics, harm reduction strategies and program delivery. Optimum delivery of such services needs to be on a sound basis of holistic concepts of sexual health, sexuality, sexual function, sexual abuse, sex education and reproductive health.

Master of Public Health

Public health aims to improve the health of populations through knowledge (collecting data to develop and test explanations and hypotheses), values (combining ethics with knowledge to assist in decision-making), action (making decisions to translate research into policy and practice and advocate for change) and outcomes (understanding research and practice to systematically evaluate public health programs).

Students will be exposed to public health values, decision-making, practice and policy throughout their studies.

Master of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology)

Clinical epidemiology is the science of applying the best available research evidence to patient care. Our courses have been designed to ensure that the theory learned is applied to patient-based examples and readily integrated into day-to-day work and research. If you want to do this program, you should have clinical experience and be a medical graduate. This masters course is for people who want to conduct research and provides professional training in current research methodologies.

Master of Science in Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology)

Clinical epidemiology is the science of applying the best available research evidence to patient care. Our courses have been designed to ensure that the theory learned is applied to patient-based examples and readily integrated into day-to-day work and research. If you want to do this program, you should have clinical experience.

Our flexible courses are offered online or face-to-face, full-time or part-time, and there are many units to choose from. Our programs are taught by clinicians for clinicians, making them relevant to your professional work. Our programs attract the best students. We encourage you to think independently and critically about how you will apply clinical epidemiology principles to your clinical area.
