Mammalian Cell Culture: A Practical Approach - March and April 2017

This course is designed for beginners to understand the principles and practice of growing and maintaining mammalian cells in culture.

It will be held in the Medical Foundation Building (K25) and comprises of five theoretical sessions and four practical sessions that will take place from the 28th of March to the 6th of April.

The morning of the 28th of March will cover the theoretical part of cell culture including:

  • The basic principles of cell culture
  • Biological and chemical contaminations and how to prevent them
  • Starting a cell culture from frozen stocks
  • Feeding, sub-culturing and counting viable cells
  • Freezing cells

Morning Tea will be provided, sponsored by Sigma.

The practical component of the workshop starts on the afternoon of the 3rd April and each participant will start a cell culture from frozen stocks.
The other 3 sessions will be dedicated to changing the cells media, sub-culturing and counting viable cells, and freezing cells.

For the practical component, students will be allocated to shifts to reduce waiting time.
Please note that there is some flexibility on the lab times available in case there is an overlaps with other Bosch workshop.

A course designed for beginners to understanding the principles and practice of growing and maintaining mammalian cells in culture.

This workshop consists of a mixture of lectures and practical laboratory training sessions and is held at the Bosch Live Cell Analysis Facility at the Medical Foundation Bldg. (K25). The course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to maintain and preserve mammalian cell cultures: from starting a culture to freezing and storing cells.
