The Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) is the exclusive provider of paediatric care in the metropolitan Washington area and is the only free-standing children's hospital between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Norfolk and Atlanta.

Serving the nation's children for more than 130 years, CNMC is a proven leader in the development and application of innovative new treatments for childhood illness and injury. CNMC's internationally recognised team of paediatric healthcare professionals care for more than 360,000 patients each year who come from throughout the region, from across the nation and from around the world.

The Children's Research Institute (CRI) within the CNMC has as its mission the advancement of research and education to improve child health and well-being. There are more than 300 scientists, trainees and students, and the annual NIH grant portfolio has grown from $6M in 1998 to more than $33M in 2006, and the total grants awarded has increased from $12M to $60M in that same period. The research has become a focal point for multi-institutional projects nationally.
