Research interests
Louise Baur's current research interests cover many aspects of obesity and prediabetes in children and adolescents. They include:
- the effective management of child and adolescent obesity and insulin resistance, including several recently completed community-based RCTs (PEACH, HIKCUPS, Loozit) and hospital-based trials (RESIST);
- mechanisms and management of obesity-associated complications, including prediabetes, orthopaedic abnormalities and obstructive sleep apnoea;
- the determinants of obesity, including the longitudinal Nepean Study of adolescents in western Sydney;
- obesity in special patient groups eg patients with acquired brain injury or developmental disability;
- population-based approaches to obesity prevention, including early intervention with first-time mothers (Healthy Beginnings Trial, EPOCH collaboration), junior sports sponsorship, changes to marketing of foods etc;
- health service delivery aspects of child and adolescent obesity;
- measurement of physical activity and dietary intake in children.
These studies are being undertaken with a range of collaborators at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, on the wider University campus, in other parts of Sydney and elsewhere.
Louise Baur is a Co-Director of the Prevention Research Collaboration, a research centre based at the University of Sydney with a primary focus on population health aspects of obesity, nutrition and physical activity (website listed above). She is Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Theme Leader for Sydney Medical School, and is a member of the Acting Executive for the University's new Charles Perkins Centre, which has a multidisciplinary approach to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
