Thank you for your interest in undertaking postgraduate studies and research with the Centre of Research Excellence in Critical Infection.
Infectious diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide with new infectious agents emerging each year. Our researchers seek to understand the body’s immune responses to infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. The study of infectious diseases and immunology at Sydney Medical School covers laboratory, clinic and population studies, and involves all organ systems and crosses all medical specialties.

General guidelines

Applicants interested in research in infectious diseases, will be considered more favourably if the following are met:

  • Academic Record: In order to enrol for a PhD, you will need a 1st class Honours degree or a Masters degree with a major research component.
  • English Skills: IELTS (International English Language testing System) minimum score of a Band 7.
    English Language Proficiency Requirements
  • Scholarship/funding: Unsolicited applicants are normally expected to apply for a competitive scholarship. Useful information for international students
  • Publications: Need to be in ISI-listed English language journals of good standing
  • Referees: Ideally, identify at least two academic referees who are familiar with your work and training and who have published in international research journals of good standing.
  • Demonstrate research interest in molecular genetics and bacteriology: Explain why you wish to undertake research with Infectious Diseases and what you could contribute to the group’s research. Or an outline of a potential research proposal.
  • A current CV: Be sure to include your personal, educational and work experience details. Also include previous research experience and publication outputs.
