Services at the Diabetes Centre

Diabetes Complication Assessment Service

Early detection of diabetes-related complications is a cornerstone of modern diabetes management and allows for more effective treatment. This service is primarily designed for people with diabetes who are managed by their family doctor. In one visit, the person will be comprehensively assessed for a range of complications including retinopathy, vascular disease, foot damage, neuropathy and renal disease. A detailed report outlining the findings and giving recommendations for treatment will be forwarded to the referring doctor.

High Risk Foot Service

The High Risk Foot Service offers an interdisciplinary approach to treating people with neuropathic or vascular ulcers, Charcot's joint or other significant diabetes-related foot problems. This service uses techniques such as debridement and casting as successful alternatives to long term hospitalisation and amputation.

We also have special interest and expertise in the treatment of painful feet due to diabetic neuropathy

Diabetes Clinical Care

Integrated medical, dietetic and educational assessment can be arranged through the Diabetes Ambulatory Care Centre. For people who are sick, urgent appointments can be made within 24 hours of notification.

Through the Ambulatory Stabilisation Programme, the Centre will supervise the commencement of oral agent or insulin therapy, or the restabilisation of poorly controlled diabetes. The Centre usually maintains contact with the person with diabetes for 3 to 4 months after which time the ongoing care is returned to the referring doctor.

Diabetes Antenatal Care

In conjunction with King George V Hospital, the Centre implemented universal screening for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) in 1986. In addition, a programme of education, monitoring and stabilisation for women with GDM is available in liaison with the obstetric team.

Pre-pregnancy counselling and intensive stabilisation is also available for women with pre-existing diabetes who are planning to have a family. This intensive programme continues throughout pregnancy.

Research

Research is an integral component of the Diabetes Centre. Many of the research projects undertaken have focused upon scientific evaluation of existing health care delivery. Other research of a more basic and scientific nature is currently being conducted into diabetes vascular disease, diabetic foot and new treatments for diabetes, blood pressure and lipids. Please visit our research activities page for further information.

Diabetes Education

Education is a key component to the services described above and is integrated into all our services. Interpreters can be arranged for people from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Most education is done on a one to one basis; however, a group diet programme is available. Specially designed reading material is also available.

Telephone Advice

The staff of the Diabetes Centre are available to assist you with diabetes management decisions over the telephone Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 5 pm. At other times you can contact the Endocrine Registrar by ringing 9515 56111
