There are no formal prerequisites, however professional experience in a health and/or human service setting would be beneficial
Course overview
Concepts covered in the workshops and readings include:
- Epidemiology and aetiology of suicide and self harm behaviours
- Economic, social and personal costs of suicide and self harm
- Effective programs and interventions
- The role of the bystander and acting when faced with suicidal behaviour
- Risk assessment and communication skills for working with people at risk of suicide
- Communication skills for working with people bereaved by suicide
- Evidence for need for postvention services
- Reviewing various state and territory suicide prevention strategies
- Emerging issues - social media, cyber-bullying and suicide and self harm
Course duration
4 full days including 2 weekend workshops (full day Saturday and half day Sunday) plus 1 full day Friday
How is the course assessed?
Participants are asked to prepare an opinion piece and a Pathways to Care intervention plan for their chosen workplace. Completing the assessment tasks is optional however participants will gain most from this short course if tasks are attempted
Can this course contribute to an academic degree?
Credit for this course may be awarded (at the discretion of the course coordinator) to students enrolling in the postgraduate program in Brain & Mind Sciences
