The quantification of neuronal loss in language variants of Frontotemporal Dementia

Primary supervisor: Jillian Kril

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second commonest form of early-onset dementia. In contrast to the early memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease, FTD patients can be divided into those with (predominantly) language or behavioural deficits. It is generally assumed that the specific symptoms seen in FTD result from different patterns of neuronal loss in the cerebral cortex but studies confirming this assumption are still fairly rare. In this project we are keen to explore whether the language subtypes of FTD do indeed have substantial neuronal loss in regions of such as Wernicke’s and Broca’s Areas that are associated with language comprehension and production. The study will use laboratory techniques such as immunohistochemistry and stereology to quantify neurons and pathology in FTD patients and neurologically normal controls.
