Nicotinic Receptors in the smoking and pre-eclamptic placenta.
Primary supervisor: Rita Machaalani
Despite the well known adverse effects of smoking during pregnancy, there has been little investigation of how the nicotinic receptors are affected in the placenta. Surprisingly, cigarette smoking has consistently been linked with a reduced risk of preeclampsia (PE). PE is a common pregnancy-related disease, where its main symptoms are increased blood pressure and protein excretion in the urine. It is a leading cause of health problems and death of mother and child in
Main method to be undertaken by student is immunohistochemistry (IHC).
