From 2012 Sydney Medical School offers MBBS students the opportunity to complete a Master of Public Health or a Master of International Public Health or a Master of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) in conjunction with the Sydney Medical Program (SMP).
These programs are designed for exceptional SMP students with a special interest in Public Health or Clinical Epidemiology who seek a more extended experience in this area than that offered in the Sydney Medical Program. The MPH, the MIPH and the MMed (Clin Epi) can be undertaken on a part-time basis and can be completed within two years. The MPH and MMed (Clin Epi) are available fully on-line, although some electives are only available in face-to-face mode. The MIPH is available only in face-to-face mode at present, with evening classes and short courses/workshops for part-time study.
Eligibility and applications
Who is eligible?
This is a new program commencing in 2012, and the intention is that students graduate with two degrees (MBBS and MPH or MIPH or MMed) in the period taken to complete the medical program.
All students enrolled in the medical program may undertake a part-time MPH or MIPH or MMed (Clin Epi) in conjunction with the SMP, however, only students with a good academic track record in the SMP will be admitted to this particular program and will receive scholarship support from Sydney Medical School. Students admitted to this program will be in either Stage 2 or Stage 3 of the SMP. Students who wish to commence MPH/MIPH/MMed(Clin Epi) in Stage 1 or those who have already commenced an MPH or MIPH or MMed(Clin Epi) are not eligible for support under this program. Similarly, students who have been admitted to this program but discontinue the MPH or MIPH or MMed(Clin Epi) or who defer their medical studies to complete the master’s program are not eligible for ongoing scholarship support.
