International Medical Electives and Independent Learning Activities

International Electives:
Sydney Medical School has agreements with a number of medical schools around the world to offer reciprocal elective placements for a limited number of senior medical students each year.

Independent Learning Activities:
All students in the Sydney Medical Program must complete an Independent Learning Activity (ILA) before July 31st in the second year of their degree and some students choose to complete this overseas. The Office for Global Health programs include some international ILA opportunities for students to complete during their vacation time at the end of first year.

Sydney Medical School students can apply for a limited number of places at the participating institutions without requirement to pay tuition fees. Partner institutions also nominate a similar number of students to undertake elective placements at Sydney Medical School in that same calendar year without requirement to pay tuition fees.

This highly regarded exchange program provides an opportunity for closer collaboration between the participating institutions.

ILAs offered

Students must arrange appropriate supervision and complete the appropriate contract and applications, particularly any additional forms for undertaking the ILA overseas.

Once enrolled in the Medical Program, students should consult the medical program website for current policies and procedures.

Applications for the Office for Global Health ILAs will be advertised via bulletins in the first half of the year. Of course, students may arrange their own placements outside the OGH programs. The Chair of the ILA Committee is .
