Bachelor of Dentistry Program/Sydney Medical Program

Sydney Medical School and the Faculty of Dentistry are pleased to offer the Bachelor of Dentistry program/Sydney Medical Program (BDent/MBBS) to fulfil the continuing need in Australia for a small number of practitioners with training in both medicine and dentistry (such as maxillofacial surgeons) and the continuing demand from a small number of students in Dentistry to also gain qualifications in medicine.

From 2012 entry the Faculty of Dentistry will introduce its new Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. The new course will replace the graduate entry Bachelor of Dentistry (BDent) degree. The policy regarding the combined Dentistry-Medicine program is currently under review and will be posted here as soon as it becomes available.

Overview

University of Sydney Dentistry students who wish to enter Sydney Medical Program are encouraged to complete the Bachelor of Dentistry first and then apply as set out below:

  1. Via application to the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney BDent graduands or graduates of no more than two years’ standing may apply for admission to the Medical Program (e.g. a student completing BDent in 2011 will be considered for admission into the Medical Program to commence studies in 2012, 2013 or 2014; a 2010 graduate may be considered for entry in 2012 or 2013)

  2. Unless their application is supported by the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and they have completed their BDent studies in minimum time and without remediation or failure, applicants will be required to complete the standard admissions process

  3. Up to three places (include Commonwealth Supported Place and international fee-paying place) in the Medical Program are available for BDent graduands or graduates whose applications are via the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry

BDent students who discontinue their dental studies may only apply for admission to the Medical Program according to the standard admissions process.

Application

University of Sydney BDent graduands or graduates who wish to apply for admission into the Medical Program for 2012 should email the Dean's office, Faculty of Dentistry (contact details see below), expressing their interest by 30 September 2011 and attaching a copy of their academic transcript.

Offers & Credit

Firm offers are made only to University of Sydney BDent graduates.

Provisional offers are made to University of Sydney BDent graduands. This offer becomes void if the BDent graduand is required to remediate.

Successful applicants will be given credit for their Bachelor of Dentistry degree and will be required to undertake a special program during their first year to cover those elements of Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Medical Program not undertaken as part of the Bachelor of Dentistry program. On satisfactory completion of these requirements they will progress to Stage 3.
