Two paths towards a cure
The Melanoma Foundation is currently funding two approaches to controlling, perhaps even curing, melanoma. These are, broadly, the biological approach and the clinical approach. The biological approach involves finding and then controlling how tumours proliferate. The clinical approach is based on detecting and removing all melanoma cells at the earliest possible time.
Either or both of these may hold the key to curing melanoma.
We are pursuing these two paths through supporting two academic chairs, one in Melanoma Biology and the other in Melanoma Oncology, at the University of Sydney. An academic chair is a professorship held by a senior academic who is also the head of a department.
