Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders
The Boden Institute, headed by Professor Ian Caterson AM, was officially named on 6 December by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Chancellor of the University and Governor of New South Wales. The Chancellor praised the legacy of Dr Alexander Boden AO who pioneered the inclusion of nutrition research in mainstream Medicine and university studies and after whom the Institute has been named. Professor Bashir also stressed the importance of continued research into obesity and diabetes given the rising prevalence of these conditions in the general population and the serious effects they have on health. These sentiments were echoed by the Vice-Chancellor and also by the Hon. Carmel Tebbutt, NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Health. The Minister added her support and encouragement for the work of the Boden Institute with its broad approach to combating and preventing obesity and lifestyle-related chronic disease. The Minister mentioned the value of the existing collaborations between NSW Health and the University and expressed her wish for additional such partnerships in the future. The Vice-Chancellor added that the Institute would play a vital role in the Centre for Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. Dr Diana Thomas represented the Boden family.
