Australia Day honours
Congratulations to Sydney Medical School research, teaching and clinical staff, and to the many alumni, who were recognised for their services to medicine and health care in this year’s Australia Day Honours.
Professor Anthony Cunningham AO, Director of Westmead Millennium Institute & Centre for Virus Research, was honoured as an Officer of the Order of Australia. The award is in recognition for his service to medicine, particularly in the field of viral research and through the development and leadership of medical and biomedical research.
Professor John Christodoulou AM, Director of Western Sydney Genetics Program, was honoured as Member of the Order of Australia, in recognition of his service to human genetics, particularly the metabolic disorders of children.
Professor Michael Boyer AM, Director of Sydney Cancer Centre and Area Cancer Services, Sydney South West Area Health Service, was honoured as Member in the Order of Australia, for services to medical oncology as an education and clinical researcher, and through the development of integrated care facilities for people with cancer.
Associate Professor Joe Canalese OAM, who stepped down last year as Head of the School of Rural Health, was recognised for his service to medicine, to rural health and to the community of Dubbo.
Alumni
Professor Wendy Elizabeth Hoy AO,(BSc (Med) 1968, MBBS 1970) was honoured as an Officer of the Order of Australia for her service to medical research in the field of chronic disease, particularly renal disease, through the promotion of health service delivery reform and as an advocate for Indigenous health in Australia and the United States.
Professor Philip Bowden Mitchell AM, (MBBS 1977 Syd), was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia, for service to medical education, particularly in the field of psychiatry, as an academic, researcher and practitioner, through contributions to the understanding, treatment and prevention of mental illnesses.
Dr Denise Margaret Robinson AM, (MBBS 1965 Syd), was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia, for service to medical administration, particularly through the development of multi-agency strategies to address public health issues and the improvement of Indigenous health outcomes.
Dr John Douglas McKee OAM, (MBBS 1959 Syd), was recognised for his service to the community of Bega, to medicine and to Rotary.
Congratulations, also, to Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry MBBS 1977 (Sydney) recognised for his enormous contribution to youth mental health. A profile of Professor McGorry is available in the Sydney Medical School online Museum and Archive.
