The Whiteley-Martin Research Centre

L-R: Mr Percy Butterworth, Mrs Margie Martin and Mr Tom Rubin

The Whiteley-Martin Research Centre was officially launched with an afternoon tea on 21st June 2010. The guests of honour were Mrs Whiteley’s nephew, Mr Percy Butterworth, and his wife, Jane, and Professor Chris Martin’s widow, Mrs Margie Martin, and their children James, Isabella and Jonathan.

The Whiteley-Martin Research Unit was established from the generous bequest of Mrs Nita Whiteley, who, prior to her death, was a patient of the late Professor Chris Martin. The Unit honours the work of Professor Christopher Martin, the Foundation Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney, Nepean Campus. Professor Martin passed away on 7 November 2006.

The Research Centre will investigate the molecular biological characteristics of Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophago-gastric adenocarcinoma. It will be led by Professor Michael Cox with Associate Professor Guy Eslick as Senior Researcher.

The Whiteley-Martin Research Centre is housed in the Clinical School on Level 5 South Block, Nepean Hospital. For further information please contact Ms Jan Mondy on 02 4734 2608.
