The annual prize evening gives us the opportunity to recognise the invaluable contributions made to the education of our medical students. Many of you have dedicated time and effort to educating our students to ensure they become exceptional medical professionals in the future. The evening also allows us to highlight the excellence and outstanding achievements of our students.
It was a wonderful evening with a great turnout for all our worthy recipients. Guests were entertained with presentations by the students on their elective and research, and a great many special guests including Brigadier John Sheldrick for RSL Australia and the President of the KDMA, Dr Peter Loder.
Thank you to all of those who have contributed to the medical program over the years, we look forward to seeing you at the celebrations in 2013.

Each year, the Faculty of Medicine offers a number of Summer Research Scholarships for outstanding undergraduate students to join a research group over the Summer University holidays. In a short period of just eight weeks, each student undertakes a focussed research project under supervision. In their last week the top students from each campus deliver their final reports and compete for the Dean's Prize. This year's Dean's Prize was awarded to Andrian Yang, our representative from the Northern Clinical School.
Andrian is studying Science (Advanced), majoring in both Molecular Biology and Genetics, and in Computer Science and Information Technologies. His project was "Bioinformatic analysis of the human beta Globin Genes", under the supervision of Leslie Burnett, Clinical Professor in Pathology. Together with fellow Summer Scholarship student (Angela Qiao), Andrian developed a computer program to align nucleotide sequences, which is both faster and more powerful than standard bioinformatics tools in this field. This was then used to search for new regulatory motifs in various genes.
