Biographical details

Alan Coates graduated in Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1966, and trained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Australia, then at the Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center in the United States. After returning to Australia in 1978 he practised as a medical oncologist in Sydney. He was appointed Associate Professor in Cancer Medicine in the University of Sydney in 1985. Research interests

Professor Coates is involved in international breast cancer clinical trials research, and studies of the value of tumor markers in the prediction of therapeutic effectiveness.

Collaborations include the Garvan Institute, Sydney, the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, and the Dana Farber Cancer Center, Boston
