Biographical details

Alan Coates graduated in Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1966, and trained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Australia, then at the Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center in the United States. After returning to Australia in 1978 he practised as a medical oncologist in Sydney. He was appointed Associate Professor in Cancer Medicine in the University of Sydney in 1985. Since 1998 he has been a Clinical Professor in the School of Public Health in the University of Sydney.

Professor Coates’ research interests include clinical trials in breast cancer and melanoma, and studies of quality of life in cancer patients. Professor Coates was President of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia in 1994 and 1995. From 1998 – 2006 he was Chief Executive Officer of The Cancer Council Australia. He was the first elected non-US member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group from 1985 - 2005 and remains co-Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the International Breast Cancer Study Group. Awards include Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2002 for “service to medicine in the field of oncology, particularly through breast cancer research”, the Medical Oncology Group of Australia Pierre Fabre Cancer Achievement Award in 2003, and in 2006 the ASCO Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Leadership, the Gold Medal of the Australian Cancer Society, the Tom Reeve Oration Award of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia and the Gold Medal of the Australian-New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group

Research interests

Professor Coates is involved in international breast cancer clinical trials research, and studies of the value of tumor markers in the prediction of therapeutic effectiveness.

Collaborations include the Garvan Institute, Sydney, the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, and the Dana Farber Cancer Center, Boston
