Biographical details

I am a postdoctoral scientist/university lecturer at the University of Sydney and my research activities are based at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research, a world class medical research facility affiliated with the University of Sydney. I obtained my PhD from Nagoya City University, Japan under Prof. Masashi Mizokami, a very well-known figure in HBV/HCV research. The initial period of my research was much focused on genetic and epidemiological studies, but now my focus has shifted more towards basic HBV research. I have extensive expertise in molecular cloning and by now I have successfully generated different HBV complete genome replicons for a range of HBV genotypes, including genotypes B, C, D, E, and F. These clones have been tested in vitro for their replication and protein expression studies are underway about their role in hepatocarcinogensis.

Previously, I served as a Virologist with the World Health Organization between 2002 and 2006 and as a geneticist with King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (KAIMRC) between 2011-2014.

My dedication to research has earned various research related awards, including various travel awards and a prestigious young investigator award.

Research interests

Venturing into the unknown and never-ending world of science and medicine has been a passion and desire of mine for the majority of my life. I am captivated by how a simple idea can be transformed into a reality that can pave the way for new cures and more advanced anatomical understanding.

My research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of hepatitis B virus (HBV) /host interactions. I have constructed a series of unique full length HBV genomic representing wild and clinically relevant escape viral mutants to study the role of mutations in the development of severe liver diseases, including liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). I am also interested in exploring the cellular signalling pathways across HBV genotypes in co- or super-Infection with hepatitis delta virus (HDV).
