Biographical details

Dr Anne Marie Thow is a lecturer in health policy at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, University of Sydney. Her research focusses on the use of economic policy to improve the food environment and prevent chronic disease. Anne Marie's current research projects include collaborative research with colleagues at the International Food Policy Research Institute and World Trade Organization; a multi-country study on policies to support infant and young child feeding; and food policy projects in South Asia, the Pacific and Africa. Prior to beginning her PhD in 2007, Anne Marie worked at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, and at the Fiji National Food and Nutrition Centre.

Anne Marie undertook her PhD at the University of Sydney, titled: Using trade and tax policy to improve diets: global agendas, politics and policy making. Anne Marie completed her Master of Public Policy (with distinction) at the Australian National University, majoring in international policy. Her honours research in nutrition (at the University of Canberra) focussed on policy as an approach to preventive health in schools, and was awarded a University Medal.

Research interests

Anne Marie's research interests include:

- multi-sectoral policy approaches to improving diets and nutrition, particularly in low- and middle-income countries

- globalization, economic policy and nutrition

- health policy analysis

Teaching and supervision

Anne Marie has been lecturing in the Master of Health Policy program since 2008. She coordinates Introduction to Health Policy and Global Health Policy. She currently supervises four PhD students, whose projects centre aroundfood policy and globalization, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
