Biographical details

After completing a PhD here at University of Sydney in 2010 in the NMR analysis of the structure of starch granules, I moved to the UK to develop metabolomic analysis of biofluids by NMR for understanding disease development. I managed a large NMR laboratory in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London developing a broad interest in disease research at a molecular biomarker level. I moved back to Sydney in September 2014 when I joined the Kolling Institute of Medical Research.

Research interests

Metabolic profiling (Metabolomics or Metabonomics) is a powerful area of systematic science that allows for the analysis of the unique chemical fingerprints that specific cellular or proteomic processes leave behind. Techniques have been developed across many analytical platforms for the analysis of both human and animal biofluids, leading to a greater understanding of the biochemical process of many types of disease.My scientific interests include developing biomarker research for prognosis and diagnosis of disease. The Cardiac Technology Centre drives understanding of heart function, particularly cardiovascular disease and heart failure. I continue to use my experience in magnetic resonance to bring novel approaches to the analysis of heart disease and various other biological processes.

Teaching and supervision

I am particularly interested in mentoring students and have a number of projects that could be considered by prospective postgraduate students.

Projects will be based around running cohorts of biofluid samples to understand disease development and progression in human and animal populations.

International links

Germany

(Bruker Biospin) I have worked closely with the applications team at Bruker Biospin to develop reliable and reproducible methodologies that can be applied across instruments and across laboratories.

United Kingdom

(Imperial College London) I worked in the Department of Surgery and Cancer for 3 and a half years, helping develop workflows for high throughput analysis. I still work closely with the team developing ideas for robust analytics
