Biographical details

Anthony Harris is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Sydney Medical School, Clinical Director at the Brain Dynamics Centre at the Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research, and consultant psychiatrist for the Prevention Early Intervention and Recovery Service (PEIRS) in the Western Sydney Local Health District. His primary clinical and research interests include psychophysiology, neuroimaging, and treatment of first-episode psychosis, schizophrenia and major depression. A/Prof Harris completed his MBBS at the University of Sydney followed by specialist training in psychiatry at Westmead Hospital. He then worked in London, UK as consultant in psychogeriatrics at University College, St Pancras and Friern Barnet hospitals following which he was awarded a research fellowship in psychophysiology at the Zentralinstitut für Seelische Gesundheit in Mannheim, Germany. After returning to Australia, A/Prof Harris held a number of senior positions including Clinical Director and Assistant Director, Acute Care at the Wentworth Area Mental Health Service. During this time, he completed a PhD in quantified electroencephalography and electrodermal activity in schizophrenia and developed an early intervention for psychosis team – a service model he has since reproduced at the Western Sydney Local Health District through the development of PEIRS. These services have been integrated into his schizophrenia research program, providing the patient population for studies.

At the University of Sydney, alongside his teaching commitments in the discipline of psychiatry, A/Prof Harris is co-chair of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research theme and member of the Research and Research Training Committee at Sydney Medical School. He has a special interest in medical education and developed a series of continuing professional development programs in psychiatry for health professionals and the community http://cce.sydney.edu.au/courses/Health+Science/Psychiatry+Courses.A/Prof Harris also has a long-standing involvement with professional and community advocacy organisations in mental health. He was the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ representative for the development of ‘The Schizophrenias” – NSW Health Guidelines for a holistic approach to clinical practice, and the College’s representative to The NHMRC Clinical Practice Improvement Network for Early Psychosis. He has been a member of the editorial board for the most recent two editions of ‘Therapeutic Guidelines, Psychotropic’. A/Prof Harris is President of the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW and the Chair of the Boardof its Research Trust Fund, and a member of the Board of the Schizophrenia Research Institute.

Research interests

A/Prof Harris’ interest in psychiatry and psychiatric research began as a medical student through his involvement in short research projects on dementia – paving the road to a career in the study and clinical management of psychosis and psychotic disorders. His research interests cover three broad areas: (a) psychophysiology and neuroimaging of first-episode psychosis, schizophrenia and major depression (b) clinical treatment of these conditions, and (c) communicating treatment best practice. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of functional neurological changes associated with psychotic illness. He was the senior author in the Farrow et al study, which first described structural MRI evidence of differences between first-episode bipolar disorder and first-episode schizophrenia and in follow-up studies that described longitudinal changes in regional grey matter and white matter volume and EEG power, in early schizophrenia. Additionally, using electrophysiology and neuroimaging, he has conducted studies exploring changes in underlying anatomical and functional networks in the brain, which are found in psychosis. His research is moving in the direction of combining neuroimaging and electrophysiology to attempt to better delineate clinical groups in severe mental illness – with the aim of helping clinicians reach a clearer diagnosis earlier for conditions where symptoms or signs may overlap but the treatment approach differs substantially.

Clinical treatment research has focused predominantly on cognitive remediation therapy to address neurocognitive and social cognitive deficits in adolescents and adults with psychotic disorders. He led a number of studies testing face-to-face and web-based treatment strategies, also combining these strategies with supported employment programs in the community. In collaboration with researchers at Macquarie University, he has developed a novel social cognitive remediation package, which has demonstrated significant treatment effects. His other areas of research include the study of cognitive behavioural treatments for comorbid substance abuse and severe mental illness. A/Prof Harris was the senior author of studies demonstrating the advantages of using ultra-brief right unilateral ECT in patients with severe depression, which achieved good antidepressant effects with fewer cognitive side effects (versus high-dose brief pulse ECT). These results are changing clinical practice in the treatment of major depression.

A/Prof Harris’ interest in promoting psychiatric education saw him and a panel of experts (as part of an NHMRC CCRE grant), develop a series of educational programs for healthcare professionals, on anxiety disorders – which are currently delivered online and via face-to-face workshops at the University of Sydney http://cce.sydney.edu.au/courses/Health+Science/Psychiatry+Courses. He has helped formulate guidelines for psychiatrists relating to social media – addressing the potential pitfalls and ethical considerations facing clinicians. He also is conducting research on clinical reasoning and the manner in which it is taught within the psychiatry teaching program of Sydney Medical School.A/Prof Harris collaborates extensively with Australian and International research groups including at The Brain and Mind Research Institute, Stanford University, University of NSW and Macquarie University. He is currently working with colleagues at the University of Sydney Faculties of Law and Philosophy on matters of ethics and law relating to the provision of consent.
